Emulsion Paint on Gallery Wall, Dimensions Variable

Replication and reproduction - the practice of copying - often emerges from a desire to reinvent the existing world according to one's own perceptions. Sarah is an attempt to isolate a singular expression in the form of a mural painted in local takeaway and remake it through a meticulous process of calculated reproduction, highlighting the mechanics of decoration and design through labored repetition.

Sarah brings to light romantic associations with interior design and decoration while revealing the futility of the replica as an empty vessel, a shell or echo of the original. It also raises questions around the subjective nature of decorative mark-making and the personal aesthetics of the copy with its complex relationship to the original. With its carefully mapped dimensions and precise reproduction of the original design, Sarah refuses an expressionistic or stylised response, while still functioning as a kind of homage to its takeaway counterpart.
